Ballynahinch Locals Get Energised in Joint Awareness Initiative

06 March 2017

Ballynahinch locals had the opportunity to get ‘switched on’ to energy as representatives from Phoenix Natural Gas and the Consumer Council recently hosted a two-day event to educate residents and business owners on energy consumption and the benefits of natural gas.

The Ballynahinch Public Information Event took place from Wednesday 15th – Thursday 16th February at Market Square and provided an opportunity for locals to meet with representatives from Phoenix Natural Gas and view the planned works maps.

The natural gas company was joined by the Consumer Council, who was on hand to speak to local consumers about how to save on their energy bills using their new online energy price comparison tool.

Geri Wright, Communications Manager at Phoenix Natural Gas said, “Over the next few years, natural gas will be made available to over 3,500 properties in Ballynahinch and later this year we will see the first customers being able to enjoy the benefits of natural gas such as high efficiency central heating boilers, instant heat, constant supply and the creation of additional space, inside and outside the home.”

“This event aimed to inform the community about upcoming works and provide a forum for locals to share concerns they had about the build programme, or ask questions. We were pleased with the positive response we received and it is encouraging to see the enthusiasm for natural gas in the area. We were also delighted to welcome the Consumer Council to the event to provide further assistance to local residents on energy saving.”

Richard Williams, Head of Energy at the Consumer Council said, “We were delighted to be invited along to this event by Phoenix and not only provide consumers with independent advice on the benefits to switching to natural gas, but also help consumers save on their energy bills, by demonstrating our energy price comparison tool.”

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said; “Ballynahinch is looking forward to being able to avail of a new utility that will not only improve the infrastructure of the town, but provide home and business owners with greater fuel choice and additional benefits. This is a highly anticipated project for the town and we are delighted that Phoenix Natural Gas availed of the local DEA Meeting platform to inform residents about the upcoming town centre works.”

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Local District Electoral Area Coordinator, Ellen Brennan added, "I would also like to thank the Consumer Council, who were also on hand the DEA Meeting, to talk to home owners about energy saving and promote their new comparison tool, which will help residents find out if they are getting the best energy deal.

“The Public Information Event was a resounding success and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Market House will continue to operate as an additional source of information for upcoming works in the area. The Council is delighted to be working closely with Phoenix Natural Gas and looks forward to continuing this relationship as works get underway to bring this important new utility to the area.”

Phoenix Natural Gas works are scheduled to commence in Ballynahinch town centre from Summer 2017 for a period of approximately 12 weeks. A lane closure will be in operation in the town centre throughout the duration and residents and business owners will be notified directly in advance.
