Natural Gas Fuels Phoenix Charity Cycle Sportive

10 April 2017

Phoenix Cycle Club and Phoenix Natural Gas today announced the launch of the Phoenix Charity Sportive to raise vital funds for the Energy for Children charity, which aims to help disadvantaged children across Northern Ireland.

Now in its third year, the Phoenix Charity Sportive, fuelled by Phoenix Natural Gas, will take place on Sunday 7th May and feature an exciting new route, departing from Lisburn and taking in towns in County Down where the natural gas company is currently expanding its network to bring fuel choice to an additional 28,000 properties.

Supported by Phoenix Natural Gas and Phoenix Cycling Club’s main sponsors, Traction Finance, McConvey Cycles and Gerard Maguire Solicitors, the event attracts hundreds of riders of all abilities and is a highly anticipated event in the cycling calendar.

Ciaran Donnelly, Chairman of Phoenix Cycle Club in Belfast said, “Each year the Phoenix Charity Sportive attracts hundreds of riders due to the fantastic cycle routes we have locally and of course the fact that all proceeds raised go to a worthy charity. This year we are delighted to welcome our namesake, Phoenix Natural Gas, as our principal sponsor for the Sportive and to support the company’s own charity, Energy for Children. It’s great to be associated with a company that can literally help fuel the sportive and make this year’s event an even greater success.”

Speaking about the partnership, Sean McGreevy of Phoenix Natural Gas said, “As a keen cyclist myself, we are delighted to sponsor the Phoenix Charity Sportive and support the local cycling communities in both our existing and newly expanded licence areas in what promises to be a memorable event.

“Phoenix Natural Gas is actively engaged in supporting community events and in raising money for the Energy for Children Charitable Trust which has helped over 6,000 local disadvantaged children since its was established in 2005. All money raised from the Phoenix Cycle Sportive will go towards helping even more local disadvantaged children and I would like to thank the Phoenix Cycle Club and all participants for supporting our charity.”

The sportive will depart from Lisburn Racquets Club at 10.00am. Riders have the option of cycling the shorter 55 mile route, taking in Lisburn, Annahilt, Kinallen, Katesbridge, Castlewellan, Annsborough and Ballynahinch. For more experienced riders, the 70 mile route will also extend from Castlewellan to include Newcastle, Dundrum, Clough, Downpatrick, Killyleagh, Saintfield and Temple, with both routes returning to the Rackets Club.

Commenting on the new route, Ciaran said, “The route promises to be a challenging but enjoyable ride taking in the breath-taking views of the Mournes and other parts of County Down. Registration packs can be collected at Lisburn Racquets Club from 9am on the morning, with the Sportive starting at 10am.

“We have a great day planned, with a Phoenix Fuelling Station located at the mid-way point at Castlewellan GAC and refreshments and entertainment for all participants taking place from 2.00pm at Lisburn Rackets Club.

“Last year we welcomed over 250 riders and we anticipate even more entrants this year, particularly if the weather holds, so I would encourage cyclists to register now and get set for a great day out.”

To enter the Phoenix Cycle Sportive, fuelled by Phoenix Natural Gas, cyclists can register via www.entrycentral.com/event/102507 or sign-up on the day from 9.00am at Lisburn Rackets Club. Entry Fee is £15.00 if you pre-register or £20.00 on the day.
